Namely, we consider transactions made by the 40 entities representing the 40 DWMs under consideration, which directly interact with more than 16 million other entities, who are the users of these DWMs. Users interacting with other users form U2U pairs and we include them in our dataset. We discard single Bitcoin transactions below $0.01 or above $100,000, dark web entry which are unlikely to show real purchases and minimise false positives. They may be attributed to a residual amount of Bitcoins in an address or transactions between two business partners where no good is actually given in return, respectively. As to security and anonymity, marketplaces guarantee their users’ privacy and protection, which provide threat actors with a safe and optimal environment for their illegal activities. We considered the entire transaction data of 31 dark marketplaces (see Supplementary Information Section S2) between June 18, 2011, and July 24, 2019. This dataset includes all the major marketplaces on the darknet as identified by the reports of law enforcement agencies3,31 and the World Health Organization32. We also considered transactions of all users who interacted with one of these marketplaces (dark marketplace’s “nearest neighbours”) after their first interaction with a dark marketplace. A direct edge represents a transaction occurring either between the dark marketplace and one of its nearest neighbours, or between two nearest neighbours, or between the nearest neighbour and some “other node”. We excluded Bitcoin trading exchanges from our list of nearest neighbours since we focus on the users’ direct interaction with the dark marketplace.

Therefore, to better understand the counterfeit economy on the dark web, we examined the prevalence and sales of counterfeits sold on 89 dark markets for the 3-year period January 2014–January 2017. Specifically, we quantified the price, volume, type, and origins of advertised counterfeits and estimated their sales volume and the value the same counterfeits social security number on dark web would attract on the surface web. We then compare the results to measures and estimations from border seizures conducted by law enforcement over the same period. By highlighting differences, we can identify product groups for which counterfeiting appears to be a problem and would be overlooked based on an analysis of seizures alone.

Here, we analyzed data from 11 darknet markets for the period Jan-2014 and Sep-2015. The findings suggest that darknet markets harbor similar counterfeit product types to those found in seizures but that the share of watches is higher while the share of electronics, clothes, shoes, and Tobacco is lower on darknet markets. Also, darknet market counterfeits seem to have similar shipping origins as seized goods, with some exceptions, such as a relatively high share (5%) of dark market counterfeits originating from the US.
